Kayaks.................? I am about to purchase an Old Town Otter Kayak and I am more used to kayaks with compartments so that my kayak wont "sink". The Old Town Otter kayak has two styrofoam blocks at each end with no compartments and I was wondering if it will sink. FYI, this "IS" research. Thank you wildraft, I understand they dont sink. I am speaking of when they are full of water and submerged if they sink. I have never delt with a kayak with no sealed compartments.

Would I be able to safely transport both kayaks without damaging kayaks or car?

Why are canoes and kayaks pointed at both ends? It seems like you could trim a couple feet off the back end and have it flat. That would make the boat lighter in weight and shorter - easier to transport to and from a waterway. Is there some advantage to having both ends points on these kinds of boats?

Cheapest safe way to carry kayaks on Jeep Wrangler hardtop (94)? Want to carry 1 or maybe 2 sea kayaks on a 94 hardtop. Many advertised rack systems but they are confusing and costs for various "parts" mount and installation looks like a pain. Can a ski rack support kayaks? Hi, I'm asking this here as I'm pretty sure most of you have sport racks on your cars to carry your skis/snowboards, etc.I'm on the verge of buying a sportrack for my car, and will definitely get one for winter sports. Does anyone know if there is something that can be added to be able to tie a kayak to it as well in the summer? Or does a kayak entail a new sort of sport rack? Thanks. All help appreciated!
Where can I get cheap, used kayaks in NH? I'm interested in getting into it with my wife but don't want to spend too much money on it. Any good ideas? I looked at craigslist, and I may end up going that way but if somebody knows a really good place that'd be awesome.
Sit-on-to vs regular Kayaks? Which is right for me? I plan on taking it to the beach a few times, and definately in the mangrove swamps of Tampa bay and our fresh water springs. I do not mind getting wet, but I will be taking it out from time to time in the colder months and if I get really wet, I may not find it too pleasent. But the sit-on-tops seem to be beter for me becuase I can get in and out of them easier. But the salesman is telling that there is no real advantage to them cuase the regular kayaks are so hard to roll over anyway. Any advice?
What is a good kayak for a beginner going on flat, calm water? I just moved to Maryland and live right on a river, with lots of creeks nearby. At the local kayak store they recommended a recreational kayak, the Pungo 120, but I'm looking for some unbiased opinions. Once I'm comfortable in the kayak, I'd like to take my dog (35 lb mixed breed) with me - she's got a life jacket and has been canoing many times, so I know she'd love this - so any additional advice on kayaking with a dog, or kayaks good for human plus dog, would be appreciated. * * Member since: May 25, 2007 * Total points: 135 (Level 1) * Points earned this week: * --% Best answer * klustofin S What is a good kayak for a beginner going on flat, calm water? I guess I should add that I'm not as familiar with sit-on-top kayaks, so I'd need to be really sold on why that would be a better option. Also I already know how to do an eskimo roll, having been white water kayaking once. And the dog has the best doggie PDF that money can buy.
Whats the difference between a canoe and a kayak? The kayaks have seat backs and are maybe narrower? Is the kayak made for more performance/speed? They are both flat bottomed so I am having trouble figuring this out, especially related to hull shape.
Does it matter where you sit in a tandem kayak? I am slightly disabled. My husband, teen daughter and I are planning on going kayaking through an outfitter that provides beginners' trips. They use tandem kayaks. They prefer to have kids go with a parent. If I go with my daughter, does it matter who sits in the front or back of the kayak if I can't paddle as much as her? Where should the stronger person sit or doesn't it matter?
Can anybody give me advice on a kayak to putz around on a lake with? I am particularly looking for an inexpensive kayak to meander around a little lake with my family. I would prefer Made in USA, but I realize that may be expecting too much. Ultimately this is for family fun and I would like best advice possible to save money, we are definitely OK with used kayaks. I have seen open styles and closed styles, for recreational use and idea which one would be best. I am kind of thinking open. Thanks!
