Whitewater Kayaking Knowledge Base
Whitewater kayaking? Okay, a couple friends and myself are planning a trip to Colorado in July for some whitewater kayaking. I was wondering what are some of the best Class III-V rivers in the mountains?? Note: We don't need extremely technical rapids, as we have a person who hasn't been over class III rapids yet lol...
What's the best way to start whitewater kayaking? I live in Denver, Colorado and I've taken 2 whitewater kayaking lessons before and LOVED it. I'm kind of a ski bum and need something to do in the off season. I don't want to spend thousands of dollars getting set up, and these lessons are either beginner or expert it seems (and EXPENSIVE). My friends are all scared of the water so I have no one to do it with. Where do I begin?
Where can I take whitewater kayaking lessons in Florida? I am in Orange County Central Florida. I've been in a "beginner" kayak for over 4 years now and want to upgrade! I was thinking of whitewater kayaking or open ocean or sea kayaking. Is there any place close by I can take lessons?
Beginner Whitewater Kayaking Boat Liquid Logic Skip? I'm trying to get into whitewater kayaking. Money is an issue for me. I have the oppourtunity to buy a liquid logic skip kayak where the price is right. Is this a good choice for me? I'm not tryin to get stuck with a boat that is too difficult for me to learn.
whitewater kayaking helemet? I am looking to buy a new whitewater kayaking helmet to replace my current WRSI helmet that is too big for me. I have a fairly small head so finding helmets that fit is hard. I was looking at some of the protec helmets, but i really dont know if they would fit my head without trying them on, and im planning on doing this over the internet. Does anyone have any suggestions for good helmets to buy?
Whitewater Kayaking Question.? There is a club at my college for whitewater kayaking that I am interested in joining. This may be a stupid question. Those kayaks look so small. I am 6'3 200 pounds. Will I have a problem? I have been in kayaks but never the small whitewater ones. Thanks for any info. Looks like a fun sport.
Whitewater kayaking question? I live a few miles from a river called Fish Creek (in NY) and it is known for some of the best/most challenging whitewater in the state. The upper part has several class 3+, a few class 4 rapids, one class 5 and one class 6. Its intense. There is a dam however that kind of slows the river down because the highest level rapid after the dam is a class 3+. This is where we would start. I have never WHITEWATER KAYAKED before. I have been Whitewater rafting a couple times and I go kayaking/canoeing all the time just nothing higher than class 2 (technically making it whitewater). I am very physically fit and I love challenges, its why I get up in the morning. I own an Old Town Otter (bottom of the line closed-cockpit) and it doesnt even have foot braces. WILL I BE ABLE TO HANDLE CLASS 2-3+ RAPIDS WITH THIS CRAFT? I am not worried about myself, I just dont want to try something with equipment that isnt suitable. I know they make special whitewater kayaks that cost thousands, with one of those I wouldnt hesitate to try any level rapid. Will my otter make it? Why, why not? Any other suggestions/advice greatly appreciated! Thanks! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Im not taking any advice from a Dutchmen....
Is whitewater kayaking techniques very different from touring or just plain recreational kayaking? I want to take up kayaking this summer, so I started looking around online for places in Massachusetts that give lessons. I found a place not to far away called Zoar Outdoors. The problem is the only clinics that they do are for whitewater kayaking. According to their website they have a beginners class that requires no prior experience. My main question is: if I learn to whitewater kayak, will I know how to or at least have a good solid start to other forms of kayaking?
PLEASE HELP: Whitewater kayaking beginner question!? so i'm 14 and am taking a level 1 kayaking whitewater class. i just learned wet exits but am really bad at them. we did some pretty big class 2 rapids today and i didn't flip but i almost did like going into eddies. thats the hardest thing. later in the day i was trying a t rescue, me being the victim and i stayed under for like 5 seconds searching with my hands for a kayak but couldn't grasp it . I THEN Started panicking and didn't wet exit. my skirt was still on and i was flapping around an inch below the surface. eventually i happened to find the kayak and lift myself up but it was a failure because of my panicking. i need some advice to not panicking, staying calm and proceeding with the steps of wet exiting(i probably wont do t rescues). first step is leaning forward, etc. advice about not panicking please? thanks
What's whitewater kayaking like? i'm going for the first time this summer and i just want to get an idea of what to expect. what are the chances of it tipping over? will my legs get wet? what should i wear? what are some things i should and shouldn't do? and anything else you'd like to share please. =)
Can anyone recommend a whitewater kayak for a very tall paddler? I'm nearly 7ft tall and currently paddle an Pyranha Everest up to grade 3 whitewater. I'm looking for a change, something not too much bigger but with more comfort for the paddler. My legs don't fit in the proper position, thighs not in thigh braces, feet not on footrest etc.
What's the best way to go about painting my whitewater kayak? I just bought my first kayak (Dagger RPM Max) and breaking into the sport this summer, and that giant blue canvas is calling out for me to make it my own. Is there a certain kind of paint to use? Is it bad to paint it for any specific reason (like for skis there's a plastic outer layer, so I've always stayed away from painting them)? Anyone else painted their boat?
Do people who go whitewater kayaking need a license or certificate? What if they were to give tours? Would they need any sort of licensing then? Can you tell me of any authorities, organizations, or associations on the matter? Provide links. How about any laws? Not that I wouldn't want to go without protective equipment, but is one required by law to wear a life-jacket and helmet? What else? I suppose the laws, if there are any, might differ between whitewater rafting and kayaking, so do comment and that as well, if you could. Oh yeah, just to make sure, when I say kayaking, I mean whitewater kayaking.
I need some tips on white water kayaking.? I've always been interested in whitewater kayaking and now I've finally decided to take it seriously and get into big time. I don't really know much about the equipment and things needed, so I figured I would just post this and see what some you people have to say. I was planning on treating myself to a new kayak for my birthday that's coming up soon (March 12 YAY!!) so I was just wondering what brands and what materials should I be searching for with the new kayak. Basically, I just need any info that can be given to a beginner. Thanks in advance guys :]
can anyone give me some whitewater kayak advice? i'm tall but not very heavy at 6'6" and 205lbs. i know i'm limited on what boats i'll fit into and i'm heavier than most paddlers but i'm probably low for my height. i'm looking for a beginner boat, i'm not really looking to do any playboating, hopefully some creeking and river running so i don't really know where to start. i think i'm limited more by my size than anything else. any suggestions for what to get?
How does one start doing whitewater sports (rafting and kayaking)? So, I want to start doing whitewater sports, obviously. Around where I live is a good place to start I guess since most of the local rivers are really tame (no higher than category 3 rapids); I live in NC near Raleigh in the Triangle. Are there clubs that I should join, and would anyone perchance know of one in the Raleigh area? Or should I practice independently? I'm starting this with my friend, and her stepdad used to be a whitewater rafter/kayaker and he went to a lot of competitions, so I'd at least have a coach. Does one usually train by themselves/with a few people and then independently join competitions?
Whitewater Kayak Ideas? So I've decided to really get into whitewater this year. I have an older 11' Whitewater boat which simply isn't suited for anything Class III and up. A coworker of mine is an ACA certified Whitewater Kayaking instructor, and plans to re-introduce me to the sport. My question is...which boat should I get? I know that's a broad question, and I have a few guidelines. 1) It must be under 8' 5" or so to fit in my dorm room upright. 2) I'm working with a college student's budget, I'm hoping to buy used at under $400 3) I'm going to be mostly in rivers & creeks, up to Class IV. It would be nice if this boat could also be used to surf when I go back to the seacoast, but I have another boat for that, so it isn't essential. 4) I'm 5' 10" average build, 170lbs So...what kayaks would you guys recommend?
Beginning Whitewater Kayaker Needs Help With First Kayak? Hello, I just got into whitewater kayaking and i have came to the point where i want to get my own whitewater kayak (I want a river running or creeking kayak). The problem is i know that they are expensive, so i don't want to buy the wrong one and hate it for the next few years. Second i tried looking up reviews online and everybody seems like they love their kayak and no kayak is bad. So im not sure which one to go for. If someone could give me an unbiased review site or just tell me an unbiased opinion on 3 really good kayaks to choose from (around 1000) that would be great thanks.
Is the dragorossi stinger a good entry level whitewater kayak? They advertise this as a jack of all trades type boat meaning it can run the river and be a play boat. I've been kayaking before at the US National Whitewater center and I enjoyed running the rapids the most, but I've never done play boat stuff. I'm looking at getting one used if that affects anything so its not a ridiclulous investment. But has anyone used it or know anything about it? Could I go over a 15 foot waterfall? the used one i found on craigslist is 400 dollars and comes with a paddle and a skirt
Whitewater Kayak for heavier weight? I am closer to 300lbs and need a whitewate kayak which can handle 300-325. Can anyone help with a link to a kayak of this proportion, or does anyone have any tips. I do not weight quite this much, but with gear and all I would like for it to handle this.
What kind of kayak should I buy? I recently took whitewater kayaking and I decided I really enjoyed it. If I got one, I dont think I would be able to take through rapids though. I would most likely just use it in a lake near my neighborhood. I am pretty much a beginner, so I dont want anything really fancy. I would like something that doesnt cost too much. I would also like something that is small and closed so that I could practice doing rolls in it. Thanks in advance for your help.
Kayaking For Large People? I am 6'3 and I weigh 245 lbs. I am looking for a sea kayak and a whitewater kayak to purchase. I am also looking to be comfortable while kayaking. Money is never a problem when it comes to kayaking; so what do some of you think, what's your advice?
Why is it that less girls participate in sports than guys? It doesn't even have to be things like Basketball or Football. There are probably 6 times as many expert male skiers as female, and a whitewater kayaking girl is rare. Hiking is less of a divide but still male dominated, and mountain biking is very male dominated too. Where are all the girls in the world? Plenty go to the gym, why don't they play sports?
Starting extreme kayaking.? i need help on how to start extreme kayaking. i'm a good swimmer and great canoeist and i have been kayaking and whitewater kayaking before but i want to know how to start doing bigger and better things.. any tips?
Stay warm kayaking? I am hoping to hear from someone who whitewater kayaks. My question is what clothing is appropriate to stay warm in the spring when the water is still very cold? I went out to practice my roll (one way roll, me rolling over and wet exiting) the other day in a lake and the water was freezing. I am new to kayaking and need clothing that allows me to wet exit easily. Thanks
Why do some people scoff at those who are more adventurous? I've heard a lot of people make fun of people who do like... whitewater kayaking, and mountain climbing, and that sort of thing, because they think they are fools for participating in dangerous activities. Am I the only one who thinks they are fools for scorning a little fun?
With all the whitewater activity at ASCI, in McHenry, MD, why only one ACA certified instructor there? He's listed on the last page. He's only certified in whitewater rafting. Nobody else, in McHenry, MD, is listed with any other certifications. List of ACA certified people... http://www.americancanoe.org/pdf/2008_ACA_IT-ITEs.pdf Whitewater park in McHenry, Maryland... http://www.adventuresportscenter.com/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrtQ3Cx2QKQ I mean, there must obviously be people there more than able to teach whitewater kayaking and swiftwater safety & rescue, no? Do they not certify themselves just because they don't need to? It cost money? What do you think? You're right, awaywa. I contacted the ACA. They are still putting together the list I'm looking for. They are also working on a new website, which will make things easier to find.
Best 2 Person Whitewater Inflatable Kayak? Looking for an IK that can easily handle Class 5 with 2 people. Used to have a Hyside Paddilac...pretty popular with outfitters, and beat that thing up...nothing could kill it. Any other suggestions?
How to get into mountain biking? It's always been a sport that interested me. Is there a big club in Denver (like there's a big whitewater kayaking club that's super helpful)? Can I rent the gear somewhere (I have no mountain bike)? Also, what are the different kinds of mountain biking?
What 'speed' SD memory card is needed for 10 MP, 3 fps, multiple seconds? I'm about to purchase a 10 MP DSLR that can shoot up to 3 frames per second. Since I'll be doing a good bit of action shots (whitewater kayaking), I'm thinking that I might hold the shutter down for a good several seconds at a time. What 'speed' of a memory card do I need? Links to online literature on the subject matter would be appreciated
Whitewater/Flatwater kayak suggestions? Are there any kayaks which are suitable for BOTH whitewater and flat water? If so could you name a few. By whitewater i mean all do-able river classifications. I don't have the space for multiple kayaks to suit multiple needs.
Whitewater Kayak Spray Skirt Questions!? Hey there guys! I have a few questions, well not really questions, more like input! ha-ha! Well anyways, my paddling team is planning a kayak trip to the Dominican Republic! And im a very experienced paddler by the way, im 16 and have been paddling since i was 7 (im a play boater and took first in the rodeo Competition at Reno) so don't try to tell me how Im bad and stuff, cuz i just want opinions. Anyway, right now I have a sponsorship from bomber gear, and they provide really good skirts for us, and that's really all i use (except a snap dragon skirt for my C1) Im really happy with these skirts, I just want a kevlar reinforced cockpit skirt. The Dominican Rapids are the most technical and dangerous rapids in the world (but with incredible holes and play spots) so I need a new skirt. Bomber Dave made a skirt for me with plastic under it. And its handled some pretty heavy hydraulics, but i know I need a kevlar for the DR. So im just wondering your opinions on kevlar skirts, anything will be appreciated! By the way, I paddle a Jackson Allstar for play-boating, and a Jackson Rocker for Creaking (thank you EJ for spons. its really helped me improve) and It needs to fit a large cockpit, and I also have a happy thruster installed, so it will need to go over that. Thanks allot guys! ~Landon Hey man, Im not sponsored by Jackson Kayaks, I said thanks for the Sponsoon (happy thrusters original name) but no, I WISH I had a Sponsorship from JK, but im just on the jackson team right now (hopefully next year good things will happen!) but yeah, your not understanding me, Dane paddles with a Kevlar plated skirt, it has a piece of kevlar under skirt, like right above your thighs, and He says plastic skirts breaks really easy, but he hates his kevlar one, its a customized snap dragon that Eric made for him (i guess thats what you get when your dads the biggest kayak maker in the world! God I wish i was Dane!) and he hates it, i doubt you know who Clay Wright is but he also has a Kev. skirt from a small company named like K16 C or something like that, and loves it, but they discontinued them, and Eric said to try and find out what to get, because hes looking to. So thanks! You just misunderstood me :)
Where can one sign up to travel with a group of people? I want to travel but have no one to go with. Ideally, would like to go with a group of mature and adventurous people who are willing to engage in the following recreational activities: hiking, kayaking, whitewater rafting in the Blue Nile in Africa, etc.
Recreation or Whitewater? What kayak is best for me.? I am 6' 2" 165, I want a kayak that offers more stability because I am a beginner. Something that i can turn relatively easy. Want either fiberglass or plastic. I will be going down creeks mostly and many flat lakes and rivers. So mostly flat water but would like one that would lean more towards low water and would have the ability to run into a little choppy waters. I would buy either used or new for price range around 300-600. Needs room for some storage for a two day trip.
I'm thinking of taking up a non-team related sport. What are some good ideas? I hate team sprts and I do skiing and play badmiton. I also play a bit of tennis and do the occasional rock-climb. I love adventure sports like caving, kayaking, whitewater rafting etc, but I'm looking for something really cool to take up. I have no limitatios except for stuff like maybe horse-riding (which would be really fun, but I don't have a horse.)
Whitewater rapids in Puerto Rico? So, I found this link which shows spots in Puerto Rico, in which there might be some whitewater rapids for kayaking. http://www.riverfacts.com/states/pr.html I then actually contacted the Adventure Tours group in Puerto Rico to see if they might be able to shed some light on the subject, or perhaps provide a guide and/or a kayak for me to use, but they said that there isn't any whitewater rapids and that they don't rent out kayaks. http://www.adventourspr.com/adventure/ I've located these spots on Google Earth... The problem there is that the images on Google Earth can be pretty old (easily a year old), I think, I'm not too sure on that. It's also really hard (virtually impossible) to make out what obsticles might be in the way. For instance, whether or not there's a fence in between where ever the car gets parked and the rapids, whether or not we'd be crossing private property to get to the rapids, whether or not the car gets parked in a fairly safe area (the kind of neighborhood). These problems really concern me considering that I don't really even know any Spanish. Anybody interested in checking out these spots? I'm in Ponce. You could come to my place and check out Google Earth, or install it for free on your computer. I'll show you how to locate the spots. Oh, and I don't have a kayak, so when I say "check out these spots" that's all we'd really be doing (trying to walk down along side of the river.) Actually, when you think about it, walking along side these rivers for miles on end is absurd. If you've got a kayak, let's take it down. Somebody's got to drive to the take-out spot to pick up the kayaker or hiker. Do whatever part you'd like, at least we could figure out whether or not there's any worth while rapids.
Who has been to more than one of these places? Bali, Koh Samui, and Vietnam? I am taking a trip out to Asia and am planning on going to a tropical area for about a week...I have probably narrowed things down to these three places. I am a 29-year old, single male and am going to be down there with a buddy of mine....so what we are looking for is a place that has a really good nightlife scene...but also has amazing beaches, lots of outdoor/adventure activities (ie - hiking, mountains, whitewater rafting/kayaking, ATVs, etc) great food, lots of culture, lots of nature, and friendly people. I would love input from anyone who has gone to any of these 3 places. I would especially love input from someone who has gone to MORE than one of these places, and maybe offer an opinion as to which place my buddy and I will like more, given what we are looking for. Thanks!
Need help on securing Kayak better in a truck bed? I have a toyota tacoma single cab short bed truck! And when i put my (whitewater) kayak in the bed of my truck it hangs out a little! does anybody have a better way of straping a kayak in the bed of a truck? What about a truck bed rack for kayaks is that a good investment or a waste of money?
Kayaking Gear Advice & Know-How? 1. Sea kayaking gear - I won't own a boat for a while, but would like recommendations for rescue equipment (throw ropes, tow lines, rescue PFD's), types of paddles and boats you like most, types of sprayskirts you like most...anything else you think is essential other than dry bags. 2. Whitewater - love it. Looking to buy an affordable helmet and sprayskirt that will last for years. Neoprene skirt is out. Recommendations? 3. Resources for learning everything there is to know about sea kayaks (shape, length, type), navigating on the ocean, tides, stuff guides and experts know. Books too. I want to know the ins and outs of kayaks. I have a decent knowledge on whitewater - would like to know more about sea. Enlighten me.
What's your favorite kayak? What was your starter kayak? It's a first kayak and I'm looking for an all around. Lakes, ocean, and the occasional soft whitewater. It needs to be a good kayak for beginners and once I see if we take it ocean/lake or white water more, we'll upgrade to a whitewater kayak if needed. What did you start with and do you recommend it? My husband and I have borrowed several friends and are now looking to buy.
What's the best kayak for a 250lb man with a 100lb dog? I need some help finding the right kayak. I weigh 250lbs and I want to take my German Shepherd with me who weighs about 100lbs. Any idea of what is a good kayak? I'm going to be in the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area kayaking on rivers and creeks (not whitewater). Thanks for any direction.

What would be a good starting kayak for me? I'm 20 years old 5'10 and about 165 pounds. I'm average build and in pretty decent shape. I want to get into whitewater kayaking as I have done a bit of ocean kayaking and really enjoyed it. (I live near the beach back home.) I don't know what a good size boat would be for me or a decent brand. (I'll probably buy my first boat used.) Anyway, what's a good starting whitewater brand/size for someone of my build and experience?
Can all these be found in Hawaii? Whitewater river for kayaking/rafting. Pristine waters with coral reefs for snorkeling. Rain or cloud forest type terrain. Natural springs (hot and cold). If not, what's missing?
Nene whitewater centre? I m new to kayaking & i m thinking about paying it a visit. Has anybody been there & is it good for novices ?

What to do in Pittsburgh area? I'm staying about an hour from Pittsburgh & we're looking for something to do. we've looked at kayaking & whitewater rafting, but i don't have a swimsuit here and whitewater sounds like it'd scare me. Is there anything a 13 year old girl, her 18 year old brother, and dad would all enjoy? Thanks!
Going outdoors and need protection? In a few months, a some buddies and I are planning a whitewater kayaking trip down some mountains. The thing is, those mountains are known to be home to a number of bears, which is a problem due to the 3 day/2 night plans. I highly doubt we will encounter any such threats, but I just can't shake that nagging feeling of doubt. So, I'm looking into purchasing a knife to protect myself. I'm not sure if it would do any good against a bear in a real fight/flight situation, but it would sure make me sleep a little better at night. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good brand? I've heard good things about Bowie and Ka-Bar knives, but I'm still to inexperienced to know anything much about them.
What meaning could this dream have: family and friends became action figures in a small school bus? Last summer I went whitewater kayaking. In my dream, all my friends and family sort of turned into action figures, and were sitting in two toy-sized yellow schoolbuses. I was normal, but I started to push the schoolbuses all around my strange world: deserts with dark brown and charcoal sand, areas with rivers that seemed to be indoors because of the dark, almost black sky. There was a narrow wooden bridge going up the river, not from bank to bank. It was built right above the rapids, almost right in the rapids. And I started to push the schoolbuses up the river on the bridge, when I remember seeing one of the buses being tossed down the river, and getting stuck in a huge hole (a dangerous part of the rapids). I was struggling to get it out (I got out of the hole with it while hanging on to an elephant..?), and once both were back on shore, all the action figures had drowned. They were plastic and couldn't move or escape, yet somehow I knew they were dead. In the world, I was the only person there, aside from the people-action figures. In the end, I thkni there was actually one that survived: it wasn't anyone I knew, but it was a "villian" action figure.
What is a better place to go camping, Ohiopyle or Kinzua? Me and my buddies are planning a trip next summer to either kinzua or Ohiopyle. we were planning on doing some whitewater kayaking, hiking, mt. biking, and camping. just curious to see if anyone out there has been to either of those places and what your opinions of them are. They are both located in Western Pa. Kinzua is by the pa/new york border in Mt. Jewett, pa Ohiopyle is in south western pa by Uniontown. Kinzua is located in the Allegheny National Forrest
best type of single person inflatable kayak? I'm looking for an inflatable kayak that is priced as cheap as possible. I won't kid you I'm still a beginner but have had enough experience that I want an inflatable kayak. What I want is a kayak that can be used in class 2-3 whitewater but would do ok in flat water. I want something as cheap as possible in price but not quality. This would be something that I could mess around with and eventually move on to specific white water kayak and/or touring kayak. A kayak has the ridges for a skirt would be an advantage. My biggest dilemma is that I'm 6'6" and weigh about 250lbs so I need something that can carry me Someone who can tell me specific models would be greatly appreciated and where I can find them.
Missouri or Arkansas Outdoors Activities? I am currently in the process of trying to plan a high adventure in either Arkansas or Missouri for a group of Boy Scouts. (Ages 14-18) The Scouts would like to participate in exciting activities such as whitewater river rafting, canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, zip lines, caving, and other "cool" activities. I have requested travel information from both states and have searched the internet, but have had no success and need your input. (The information they provided was general and had no helpful websites or tips.) Thanks for the help!!
Inflatable kayak? (Sea Eagle vs Qayak)? I'm interested in an inflatable kayak. For carrying space reasons, a rigid one is not an option. It's just for recreational lake use and not any river use. Has anyone here owned or tried the Qayak and Sea Eagle 330? They seem similar and are similarly priced. I see loads of testimonials for both. I know that neither of them will stand up to hard whitewater use and that's okay. If I ever get there, I'll resolve the transportation issue and invest in a good rigid boat. For now, I'm looking for a good inflatable in the <$400 range.
Has anybody ever found a sight that gives complete listing on all Americans that where in the Olympics? Look the info on WIKI is incomplete for example if you where to look at the 1972 American team for Munich you wouldn't see any names for Canoe/Kayak. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_at_the_1972_Summer_Olympics Yet James McEwan won a bronze in Men's SLALOM C1 (SINGLE CANOE WHITEWATER) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canoeing_at_the_1972_Summer_Olympics USOC has no archives for a list of American athletic delegation going back to past Olympics , Team sport federations seem to do the best job as they give a good detail of info, smaller Olympic sporting federations not so good. Can you always find info on those that won medals from IOC , but not a list of all the competitors or at least no to my knowledge. Info on the Web in this regard stops at 1996 for the most part. CORRECTION- YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND INFO ON PAST MEDAL WINNERS AT THE IOC.COM
Recommend a buoyancy aid? Hi there, I am looking for someone to recommend a buoyancy aid because I am on a course at which I become an outdoor instructor when I graduate and that includes Kayaking and Canoeing. I also go on the occasional Kayak trip with my friends. It has to be a good all round B.A. I paddle mainly flat water and rivers but with the occasional whitewater and surf kayaking trip. Thanks for the un-sarcastic answers :-D Marc
Has anyone tried shipping a kayak? I've just moved to Texas....there isn't really any whitewater down here, of course. I'd like to bring my boat and not have to rent one when I travel to other places. I have a rec boat(Dagger RPM Max). Has anyone shipped a kayak through the major airlines? What is the cost and incovinience?
Having increased my fitness levels and exercise frequency I am feeling super hungry - craving protein - help?? Hi there, I currently kayak (whitewater/sea) at least once and mostly three times a week, look after my family of four children and my husband, cycle practically everywhere I can (Towing my two younger children in their cycle trailer). I have been dieting for a while now and even though am not losing a lot of weight am toning and very fit (albeit a sz16 but as I was a weight trainer in college I have no illusions I am going to get below this size) HOWEVER suddenly over the last couple of days my appetite has really increased to the point where today I am practically insatiable - I mean it, all day today like I am starving.... Has anyone else had this after a long time (approx 5 months) following a fitness and diet plan... I am craving protein (eggs and meat) and seem "off" carbs anyone else had this??? XXDXX DavidG - having been a weight trainer 80% of the fat I had accumulated due to pregnancies was actually due to muscle deterioration and weighs heavier than fat due to it's bulk. I completely agree I am not yet 100% fit but if you can kayak on whitewater and sea for approximately 3 hours three times a week plus cycle with a trailer at least five times a week, plus take care of a house, children and husband who is physically disabled I'll accept your critique and reduce my calorific intake to below 1700 a day
Calling other mums of 4+ children - have you found it harder to lose weight?? Hi anyone and thanks for looking at my question. I am a mum of 4 and I have been healthy eating - going to the gym at least twice a week, swimming mostly twice a week and am really active and conscious of what I eat. (my main hobby is kayaking whitewater and sea) Trouble is in four months I have lost a grand total of 12 1/2 lbs and I am at a plateaux - the second one in two months. Has anyone got any ideas to help get over this plateaux. I have to admit to having taken a few days off the calorie counting as it is getting to unealthy realms of obsession and hoping my body will kick back into weight loss mode. help anyone??? (I am a uk size 14/16, 13st6lbs *sob* with a small muscular frame but of course have the ever so attractive baby belly from producing four stunning healthy children) anyone???? mateser girl - I am happy for your mum but that wasn't an answer to my question. Not everybody is lucky enough to have your mum's consitution - give her a hug and admirational high five from me

What to do on non-weight lifting days? I'm 6'3, 240 pounds, trying to get back to 220 (I was there last year). I have a solid history of good physical condition and solid history of exercise. I bike ride and whitewater kayak. I'm in the gym 5 or 6 days a week, but recently decided to start focused weight training to strengthen and tone. I'm happy with my body but want to lose fat (primary) and build some muscle (mostly in abs/upper body). My routine right now is 30-40 minutes of eliptical, and I do 4-6 machines. The new program has me swithching to 3 days and using free weights (mostly for upper body). I'm about to start the program as recommended. I like to go to the gym, and I like to lift. Since I'm only supposed to lift 3 days a week according to this plan, what should I do on days I want to go to the gym but it's not a lifting day? Can I lift light weights (do endurance work, less weight, more reps?) or will that be counterproductive. What CAN I do on my off-days without upsetting the program?
