What size of outboard motor do I need for a sea kayak? I know this sounds like I'm losing my marbles, but I really do plan to attach an outboard motor to a sea kayak. The plan is to use it to commute across Otago Harbour in southern New Zealand on a daily basis, 8 miles each way. I'll be using a wetsuit, and I'll be carrying emergency paddles and a mobile phone, so not to worry. But I need to find a motor of the right size - I know 150cc inboard jets get kayaks up to 25mph. I'd be happy with half that. Who makes outboards with, say, 2HP? As all answers here are very useful, I am putting the question to vote. Thank you, everybody.
Where can I find cheap, good deal, discount, reduced, wholesale, used, inexpensive, sea kayak for sale, to buy? We are looking to buy a sea kayak somewhere in New England. We are going to vacation in Maine this summer so we could pick one up almost anywhere in up state New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont (maybe), New Hampshire or Maine on the way up or on the way back. We are also wondering what the best type or kind of kayaks would be good for beginners or inexperienced paddlers.
Can a person with a lower back injury (two spinal fusions) still sea kayak? My husband has had 2 lower spinal fusions as a result of car accident. He is now 55 and wants to sea kayak. He is reasonably fit. My question is - is moderate sea kayaking and the spinal rotation required bad for his back? Or should be just LEARN how to kayak responsibly? In other words, is this even a sport he can contemplate. Any experience out there?

I am planning on kayaking around the pictured rocks in the beginning of August, but I have no idea of what to wear since it will probably be chilly. Any suggestions? Any Kayaking fans out there?? Cheapest safe way to carry kayaks on Jeep Wrangler hardtop (94)? Want to carry 1 or maybe 2 sea kayaks on a 94 hardtop. Many advertised rack systems but they are confusing and costs for various "parts" mount and installation looks like a pain. What's easy, cheap, and safe for short hauls (e.g., 20 miles or so) -- live on Lake Superior coast. Thanks.

Where are the best places in New Zealand for sea or flat water kayaking? I have the opportunity to spend several months in New Zealand next year (Jan - March). I'd like to do some kayaking both on in-land lakes and rivers or in coastal areas. My goal is to see the natural beauties of NZ. I'm not as interested in shooting down death-defying white water rapids. Any suggestions for the best destinations?
Sea kayak vs. river kayak? Is it possible to take a river kayak into the ocean, like towards the shore? If not, what are the problems that could occure by doing so? River kayaks are so much cheaper than sea kayaks and are a lot more compact, so I would like to purchase one of those. Thanks.

Can I go out 14 miles out to sea in a Kayak and return safely to shore.? I live in south Florida, and wanted to go out Kayaking at night with some friends, but I am not sure if it is possible or even safe to make a journey so far out, the reason I wanted to go that far out to sea was to see the stars without the lights from the shore bothering my view. I am not a kid I am 33 years old, and I must say I did expect much better advice from you people...
How would I go about starting a sea kayak rental business in Hawaii? I want to start a sea kayak rental business in Hawaii where I rent about 4 or 5 kayaks off the beach for $20 an hour. Does anyone know if I could just pull up my kayaks onto any public beach and start renting them? I know about 30 years ago I probably could have done this with no problem, but in todays world of excessive government rules and regulations that stifle business growth and development I'm sure there are a bunch of hoops I would have to jump through to realize this dream. If anyone could provide good information regarding starting a business such as this in Hawaii it would be appreciated.
Are canoes capable of sea touring? I am thinking of taking up canoeing. However, being open boats are they capable of going on the sea safely? I know that kayaks (closed) are great for sea touring - but wasn't sure from what I've read so far whether the same applies to canoes. Generally what are the pros and cons of canoes versus kayaks? Many thanks.
Sea kayaking? Do you only kayak in the sea at certain tide times? Any tips in general about sea kayaking - PLEASE!
Sea kayak sizing?/? I'm thinking about getting a sea kayak but am not sure what size to get. I am a female, about 5 foot 5 inches. Any magic on what size kayak I should get? Any other features or suggestions??
Speed Of A Sea Kayak? I would like to know how fast a sea kayak is normally going when you have an average person paddling it along a placid bay. I hope to travel 12km (8 Miles) in about one hour - is that realistic for a guy who works in an office?

Where can I take whitewater kayaking lessons in Florida? I am in Orange County Central Florida. I've been in a "beginner" kayak for over 4 years now and want to upgrade! I was thinking of whitewater kayaking or open ocean or sea kayaking. Is there any place close by I can take lessons?
Sea Kayaking -- lessons needed? Sit on top or sit inside? I live right next to the ocean and want to get in to the sport. There's a 2-day course that I could take, but I don't know if it's really necessary. I also have a question about types of kayaks used (sit on top or sit inside). What advice can you give me? THANKS!
Possible for ocean to sweep a kayak away? I am getting into sea kayaking but my biggest fear is getting swept away by the ocean. Is it possible, if under calm conditions (example, a nice summer day), for the sea to just sweep a kayaker away, despite paddling your best? Maybe with a current taking you away or wind or something. If it is possible, is it common amongst sea kayakers? What should you do if your paddling efforts are doing nothing? Thanks.
Need to raise £2000 in just under a year any suggestions? There is this amazing opportunity to go to Norway to go sea kayaking for a month! But it’s very expensive. With certain grants I might be able to get it down to £1500 but that is unlikely. I'm not yet 16 so finding a job has been impossible and my over protective parents wont let me get a paper round to help. Any suggestions for money raising would be welcome.
Inflatable kayak? (Sea Eagle vs Qayak)? I'm interested in an inflatable kayak. For carrying space reasons, a rigid one is not an option. It's just for recreational lake use and not any river use. Has anyone here owned or tried the Qayak and Sea Eagle 330? They seem similar and are similarly priced. I see loads of testimonials for both. I know that neither of them will stand up to hard whitewater use and that's okay. If I ever get there, I'll resolve the transportation issue and invest in a good rigid boat. For now, I'm looking for a good inflatable in the <$400 range.
Fibreglassing over foam to build a boat - how to do it right? I am building a CAD model of a boat which I will be slicing up and have plywood spants cut from it by a laser cutter. I'll then assemble the plywood spants in 3D and fill the gaps with foam. Then I'll put fibreglass over everything. It's supposed to end up being a mix out of a jetski and a sea kayak, about 6 metres in length, powered by a 2 to 3 HP outboard motor, for commuting on a bay in southern NZ (salt water). Does anyone know how to prepare the foam for the fibreglass, or do I just lash it on and sand later, using filler till it's smooth? Maybe any links known to relevant sites? Cheers.
