Do i absolutely have to have a fancy roof rack system in order to transport a kayak? I'm looking into get a kayak, well my boyfriend and I are. We're students and I've seen what kind of an expense its going to be just to get a rack on our car (and we've still got the cost of the kayaks and accessories themselves!)....my question to you is....is it ABSOLUTELY necessary? Is there some way of using chords or other things to do the job? For the most part we will not be travelling long distances with them....we have a lake about 5-10 mins away...but we would like to take them with us to the cottage (its about 3 hours away) once or twice.... What do you think?
Ocean and River Kayak? Is there such a thing that can go into both types of water? Thing is I'll soon be living in Sidney, BC like a block away from the ocean, so I'll mostly take it there. But sometimes I'll want to go to the lake maybe. Like I'll go back to my home town every once in a while (once a month at the least), and I'd definitely want to go to the lake with my kayak. Just for the fun of it. I'm very new to kayaking. I've only done it once in the ocean years and years ago. I've been dreaming about it ever since. I don't know what my budget is yet. I'm just setting goals right now. But I don't want to spend too much on a kayak 'cause I'm pretty much a beginner. Which other things should I consider? Kayak and accessory wise.
Looking for kayak paddle advice (ocean kayak)? I am shopping for a kayak in the very near future. I am getting the accessories such as the storage rack, car rack, etc. up front before I buy my kayak. I was looking around at kayak paddles and found the price difference in excess of $100. Some paddles are around $20, some are around $120... and everything in between. My first instinct is to just get the cheapest paddle, since I'm only kayaking recreationally and I don't care much how fast I go. But I also don't want to end up with a paddle that is made of cheap plastic that will crack from the heat within a year, or rust or something lame. Can someone explain what advantages the more expensive paddles might have? And maybe what price range I should look at for weekend ocean kayaking. Thanks!

I am completely at a loss on Christmas ideas...help!? I have quite a few people I need to buy for this year, but don't really have an idea of what or where to start. If I tell you a little bit about the people, could you help me think of presents that might work? My budget is pretty open. Fiance: Already ordered him a Roku netflix player - need another idea, too. He's a complete and total movie freak. He's also really into martial arts, running, cooking, travel, and music. He already has all the clothes/shoes/accessories that he wants. He also really enjoys camping and the outdoors. He wanted a kayak, but we have no place to store that in our condo. He's a videographer by profession, so anything related to that would be good, but would also probably be more than I can afford. Any ideas? Father: No idea. Help! He's very much a guy's guy, and loves woodworking and lathe work, and motorcycles (BMW - he's not a Harley guy or a biker type - just likes to ride.) He also likes music to some degree. Fiance's mother: Again, help me. She already HAS everything she could possibly want, and has everything she could want/need to decorate her home. She runs a franchise jewelry business, and travels a LOT. She's really kind of a fun-spirited hippy chick. I like her. :-) Fiance's Father/Stepmom: This is what's particularly stumping me. They are very well traveled and affluent - it's truly a 'what to get the couple who has everything' question. They work together as a team in higher education, travel all over the world constantly, and are highly interested in diplomacy, peace in the Middle East, and humanitarianism. My sister: She is married and has 6 children. She is a nurse, and so is her husband. I'd like to get a 'family present', so I don't have to buy 8. She's into Yoga a lot lately, and loves to read. My brother: Lives in Alaska with his wife and 16 year old daughter. He's a machinist, gun enthusiast, and hunter. He also loves motorcycles, snomobiling, and paintball. Read: Redneck. I would also like to get a 'family gift' for them as well. My aunt: We are visiting her over the holidays, and I'd like to give her a 'thank you' gift for having us. She is in her late 60's, and enjoys dogs, gardening, cooking, wine, and travel.
How to explain to 3 kids of different ages, about my pregnancy? Hello. I found out last week, that I am pregnant. I am 6 weeks. We haven't told our kids, family and friends yet. We want to tell our kids first. Starting tomorrow, each child of ours will have their own special day. We need suggestions on how to say it and when to say it. Here is a little info: 9 year old girl. Her special day is getting a new bike and going biking, lunch at her favorite restaurant and a surprise, (well two). A trip to the pet store to get a little animal (gerbil, hamster, fish, etc) and maybe a little buddy, too. 3 year old girl. Her special day is a trip to the bouncing place. Her surprise is a trip to our local doll shop, where they sell stuffed animals, baby dolls, etc. She can choose 3 things with accessories. She will choose a restaurant she wants to eat at. 1 year old boy. His special day is a trip to the park. (Best thing ever, for him.) There is a wagon ride, lots of equipment, a sand box, icecream stands, a lake with fish and ducks, another lake you can canoe in and kayak in, a petting zoo, a track you can run on, tons of sport fields. He will do it all. His surprise is a new toy from toys r us and a beta fish. I keep it simple. Please help.
Help with wedding and honeymoon packing list? We are doing a great variety of things, and I'm trying to make sure I'm not forgetting anything. We will need; (this is a road trip, btw) Things for the wedding (clothes, accessories etc.) Things for in the car (emergency supplies, snacks, music, etc.) Things for camping Things for hiking Things for kayaking Things to dress up and look nice in I've got all the basics taken care of, but now I am just trying to think of what useful or necessary items I may be forgetting. Any suggestions? What would you bring on your honeymoon? I'd also like some suggestions on what I can bring or pack to help out our accommodations to be a little more romantic. :D By hiking, I mean backpacking, so I'm going to have to bring a trail pack, I think.
