- Check with the British Canoe Union for clubs and outfitters. I'm certain that there are groups in your area. In fact, Valley, a prominent kayak manufacturer, is based in Nottingham. Lessons are a good way to start. Find a lesson that covers rescues-- what you do when you capsize and come out of your boat. It's important stuff, and it'll help differentiate between the lessons given to tourists versus ones for people interested in doing the sport on a regular basis.
- Lessons are always a good idea, it's a really good way of meeting other people that are into kayaking too. You could try this place, it's on the outskirts of Nottingham at Holme Pierrepont: http://www.nationalwatersportsevents.co.uk
- Hello Sort out a local club as you should not go by yourself. The club will know where you can and can't go locally. They may even have or know some one with a spare Canoe or Kayak. Andy C
