How did transportation change from the first canoes to 1899?

I am working on report for school about how transportation changed from when the explorers used canoes until the end f the 1800's. Please give examples or any other information you have.

1. The locomotive was invented in the 1830's. The car was invented in 1895. By 1899, most ships were metal, and were considerably larger than a canoe.
