Straight Up Kayaks

Are canoes capable of sea touring?

I am thinking of taking up canoeing. However, being open boats are they capable of going on the sea safely? I know that kayaks (closed) are great for sea touring - but wasn't sure from what I've read so far whether the same applies to canoes. Generally what are the pros and cons of canoes versus kayaks? Many thanks.

1. on a breezy day they are hard to steer, I learned that while on a lake they almost act like a sailboat. they are meant mostly for river travel
