What's the best way to start white water kayaking?
I have been slow water kayaking since early last summer, but now I want to get into and learn white water kayaking. I don't know anybody else in the sport and could use some advice on how to get started and what to expect. I already know not to drown!

- FIND A LOCAL CLUB. A good club will know the local streams and will be willing to teach you river reading and scouting. White water is VERY different from slow streams. Myself, I'm happy with the occasional riffle found in class I and II streams. Do a few type I-III streams before you try to conquer that massive class V that's been drowning everybody in your area. If you're in Missouri, check out http://www.missouriwhitewater.org/ which is the missouri whitewater association. Even if you're not, there is an EXCELLENT bulletin board with some really knowledgeable folks. But most of all, never attempt a new stream before you talk to the locals!
- Find a local paddling club. A shop that sells canoes and kayaks can probably refer you to a club or you can look at the American Whitewater web site to find local organizations. Club members can show you the basics and most members are willing to loan you equipment to give it a try. There are whitewater canoes (open boats) and kayaks. In addition, you will find that there are downriver paddlers, playboaters, and creekers. Some outfitters, recreation departments, colleges, and camps also offer whitewater classes.
