Straight Up Kayaks

is it possible to sleep in a canoe on an extended trip?

not a kayak obviously, but one of those roomier, open canadian type touring canoes? At 17ft long and 38" wide it ought to be possible to sleep in it overnight. But you would need some kind of cover. Does anyone know if this is done?

  1. I would only do it if it were on shore and not in the water, to much risk to tip over in the night!
  2. i guess so as long as there are shifts manning the canoe and you dont get motion sickness.
  3. Depends how much u thrash about at night I guess! But I suppose ud wake up pretty quick if u fell out!
  4. I've slept under my canoe in heavy rain, but sleeping in the canoe has it's drawbacks, like it's hard and not evenly flat with the ribs and such. I find the ground a lot more comfortable, with a self-inflating pad and sleeping bag.
  5. Yes, entirely plausible. Here's the proof: http://www.hilleberg.com/Images/gallery/boat.htm
  6. On Land it would be OK - turn it upside down and sleep under it. Dont sleep in it the right way up on land though, the pressure of your weight might damage the hull (the water supports it better than the land does) On water I am not so sure, possible to sleep in it but also possible for it to capsize I think. If you want to try it, I would get a tarpaulin or somethng to cover it and give protection from the elements
  7. yes, its possible, but i would recommend getting the boat on shore, or else get someone on watch duty. If you are gonna sleep in it, all you need is a sleeping bag, a mat, and a tarp yo put it over the boat. It might be uncomfortable, but its possible.
