Is there a weight limit on Kayaks?

I'm looking at kayaks for sale and in the details for them, there isnt a weight limit, but i heard that they were limits for them. I'm looking for a sit-in, and probibly going to paddling on still/ lower than class 2 water. Any info will help. Thanks.

  1. Yes, there would be a limit. Check with a manufacturer.
  2. Manufacturers specify recommended weight ranges for each model kayak. Usually it's a pretty wide range. For larger recreational and sea kayaks the upper limit can be 250-300 lbs. or even more. Most manufacturers' websites have specifications posted, including weight limits-- sometimes even for discontinued models.
  3. Kayaks are designed to accommodate boaters of a range of weights. You need to talk with a kayak salesperson. Attend a kayak school. You will get the opportunity to try different models of different capacities. Dealers also hold 'paddle days'. Overloaded kayaks are sluggish and unstable. An outsized kayak will be hard to paddle.
