How did the mohawks build their canoes?

And is there any other transportation they used to get around?

  1. They just ordered them from the Sears catolog..What do you think, they made them by hand.
  2. They used birch tree bark strechted over a wooden frame, bound with sinew and leather wrappings. Other than that, they walked.
  3. I have to disagree with Spike. The Montgomery Wards catalog was more popular with the Mohawks. The Chippewa Indians which lived around the Chicago/Great Lakes area were more partial to the Sears Catalog.
  4. According to researchers in Elliot Lake, the Mohawks were very resourceful, they would sneak up on the Iroquois Indians as they were building their war canoes and when they were finished the Mohawks would jump out of the bush and scare the Iroquois then they took their canoes. It was much cheaper and easier than going to Sears and having to wait weeks for a canoe to be delivered by the pale faces.
